Starting at Playa San Miguel

Just as you drive into Ensenada through the toll booth, you will find State Park Playa de San Miguel on your right, an iconic spot for surfers and renowned for being the “Craddle of Mexican Surfing”. Its consistent fall/winter waves and laid-back vibe make it a favorite for those looking to challenge the Pacific swells. The beach also offers a quieter, less crowded atmosphere where you can spend the night camping—perfect for disconnecting and enjoying this protected habitat that blends a mountain stream that leads our hearts into the ocean blue.

Stop 2: Top Beaches of El Sauzal de Rodríguez

31°53’38.8″N 116°41’54.3″W

Just a bit further south, you can find these beaches of El Sauzal: Tres Emes, Beans, Stacks, Kalifornias and a local spot we call “Quintas Papagayo”. These beaches are currently under residents battle to protect them from the threat of a massive project that endangers them. Imagine an oasis of tranquility and natural beauty being threatened by the shipping container and fuel business. So it’s very important people, both local and visitors, come and use these beaches as much as we can.

These beaches are ideal for a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle, especially for the local community on the weekends and when they get off work. This area is popular for volley ball, surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, open water swimming, fishing or just to hang out — explore rocky formations and enjoy looking into a silver mirror of Pacific blue.

Stop 3: Whale Watching in Todos Santos Bay

31°48’46.3″N 116°41’34.1″W

During the winter months, Bahía de Todos Santos becomes the stage for one of the planet’s most spectacular migrations: gray whale watching trips. Tours depart from Ensenada’s port or Malecon, offering a unique chance to see these majestic mammals from a safe, respectful and non-invasive distance. Don’t forget your camera — these photos shoots are unforgettable as you most likely will spot other local marine species such as California Sea Lions and Dolphins! If you’re a seafood lover, oyster farm tours are also available to try the freshest and best quality of oysters in the world.

Stop 4: Sport Fishing in Ensenada

31°51’37.3″N 116°37’36.4″W

Ensenada is excellent for sport fishing enthusiasts. Bahía de Todos Santos is famous for its rich fishing grounds, where you can find species such as tuna, mahi-mahi, yellow tail, cabrilla and halibut. Make sure to check for each species’ limits and open/closing of their fishing seasons. All persons engaged in recreational fishing on board a vessel must have a valid individual permit. Local operators offer guided excursions to the best fishing spots and can handle the permits for you or you can go directly to official governmental site of SEPESCA to purchase yourself. Catch your own trophy and feel the thrill of deep-sea fishing responsibly!

Stop 5: Playa Hermosa and the Boardwalk

31°50’10.1″N 116°36’36.6″W

Next, head to Playa Hermosa, one of Ensenada’s most popular public beaches. Since we have life guards on duty at this beach its ideal for swimming, you can book a surf lesson ahead with one of the local surf schools like English spoken Surf Ensenada with 21 years of experience, a volley ball match, or simply relaxing under the sun with drink in your hand, this beach has something for everyone. Then, stroll along the boardwalk, where you can enjoy a peaceful walk while watching the sunset take place and taking in stunning ocean views as cruise ships sail away into the horizon.

Spot 6 at La Bufadora

31°43’33.8″N 116°43’07.3″W

Continue your adventure to La Bufadora, the largest marine geyser in North America. Located about 35 km south of urban Ensenada, this natural wonder shoots water up to 30 meters into the air, creating a spectacular show. Here, you can explore the ocean’s habitats by kayak or a diving tour, there’s delicious food like fish tacos and cheese stuffed clams on the grill, and shop for unique souvenirs. Just so you know, La Bufadora doesn’t “blow” 24/7, check the weather report for good swell conditions and expect it to be more active when there’s a good western swell, regardless of the swell being mixed with north or south swells.
